The Patent Workbench™ Reader Search Module
The Search Module within the Patent Workbench™ Reader is one of our customers’ favorite parts about using the Patent Workbench™ service. It allows them quick access to what they want, when they want it–introducing efficiency to a process that was previously quite cumbersome. Landon IP is driven by a focus on understanding and meeting the needs of our customers, so when our Patent WorkbenchTM beta users told us that an effective search tool was high on their “wish list”, we made it happen.
Search is filled with helpful tricks to help you pinpoint the terms you want. Options for searching terms inclusively, exclusively, and even loosely are all supported. Today, however, we’ll be taking a high level view of searching with Patent Workbench™ Reader.
We’ll show you some key features of Search: why it’s easy to use, how it gives you answers in context, and why searching the entire file history, related references, and YOUR notes at the same time is such a huge advantage.
Read on to find out why our customers love searching in the Patent Workbench™ Reader!
The thing that you will notice first while searching in the Patent Workbench™ Reader is that it’s easy to understand the results. Results are displayed either by relevancy (according to keyword) or date, and each set of results is organized by section, not by document alone. This makes it easy for you to jump right to the part of the document you’re interested in.

Search results are presented by section, so a document can be listed more than once due to hits in different sections.
In the above example, you can see that the search result for “rejection” in a chosen file history yielded two separate results in the (2006-Aug-22) Final Rejection document: the Response to Arguments section and the Conclusion section. This way, you don’t have to wade through the entire document.
If you expand the hit result by clicking on the blue text or using the plus button, the matching fragments are shown using a keyword in context display.

The keyword in context search result display allows further examination prior to opening the specified document.
This is another feature that makes searching easier and more efficient. The quick preview of text around your keyword shows you why that result was returned and allows you to make the decision to open the original document or not. Clicking on the keyword in context fragment will open the PDF of the original document within the Patent Workbench™ Reader–a fast and painless process. You can see how searching for keywords in the Patent Workbench™ Reader is streamlined and optimized to pinpoint the areas of interest to you, and take you there with as little hassle as possible.
Let’s take a look at what happens when you click on that keyword in context fragment result we just discussed.

The embedded PDF viewer quickly loads within the Patent Workbench™ Reader, providing a seamless experience.
Additional features from the above example are worth examining, so let’s dig a little deeper. The section on the left of the embedded PDF viewer interface shows all of the search results we just found, for fast navigation. Should you wish to go beyond the search results and start looking through the file (the entire annotated file history in this example), you can simply click the tab for Bookmarks and have the entire set of documents at your fingertips in a flash.

The Bookmarks tab in the Patent Workbench™ Reader PDF viewer gives quick access to every single document.
This design makes it easy to navigate directly to your point of interest instead of making you open, close, and reorganize like you used to have to.
The final big point I want to bring home is that you can search the annotated file history, the related references, and your customized notes all at the same time. This functionality of the Patent Workbench™ Reader Search Module saves you the time of having to run the same search string multiple times. Forgot whether that key phrase was in the annotated file history or the related reference documents? Search once and display both results on the same page! Having easy and searchable access to your created notes is another favorite of our customers–it’s all right there for convenient access.
The goal Landon IP had in mind while designing the Search Module of the Patent Workbench™ Reader was to deliver accurate results quickly and efficiently, and our customers agree that we’ve done it!
